Scotland 2025 Photoshoot

We at La Leche League Collective couldn’t agree more! So, we hosted a two-day photoshoot in Glasgow and Edinburgh to try to capture what breastfeeding looks like day-to-day for parents in Britain.

Photographer Hayley Fraser previously did a breastfeeding photography project in Aberdeen, which we heard about during our Art of Breastfeeding book tour. When we reached out to her, she was more than happy to help us photograph parents nursing in a wide variety of places.

The Glasgow Science Centre, Scotrail, Joseph Pearce Restaurant and Bar, The National Gallery on the Mound, and Edinburgh Libraries all generously made space for us. So photographs were taken in places parents find themselves every day while out and about with their children. Significantly, June 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of the Breastfeeding (Scotland) Act which legalised parents’ rights to breastfeed in public in Scotland.

Part of the joy of the project was talking with mothers and fathers about why representation matters. We have a full highlight on our Instagram account with stories from participants talking about this. For some, it’s as simple as having a nice photo reflecting an experience that is fundamental to their parenting, for others it’s about honouring a difficult journey that may include pumping, formula, nipple shields, etc, and for some it’s about race and class visibility. What it’s always about is celebrating an important relationship – breastfeeding.

 Our focus as LLL Leaders is usually on offering breastfeeding/chestfeeding support so it was a really fun day of listening to amazing stories, brainstorming spots to take photos, and celebrating the importance of representation and all the individual journeys behind the photos.
