We’re so excited to be partnering with Aberdeen-based photographer Hayley Fraser for a second year in co-hosting her exhibition, Feed Free.

This work explores themes around breastfeeding, representation in art, and where this fits into the experiences of parenthood. Creating art alongside breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human milk feeding support is part of our mission to support parents on their infant feeding journeys and increase awareness of the benefits of the human milk relationship within families and the community.

Over the course of 2 years, through the initial support of the Corra Foundation followed by a grant from Creative Scotland, we worked in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Dundee to capture outdoor, public photos of parents breastfeeding their infants and toddlers in iconic Scottish locations as well as inside public buildings and spaces. Hayley worked individually with parents in Aberdeen and Glasgow to capture more intimate moments at home between mothers and babies.

These images not only memorialised special moments for these parents but also help us as a breastfeeding support charity spread the message of the benefits of breastfeeding, chestfeeding, and human milk feeding while also ensuring that the parents who come to us for information and support see themselves on our pages and social media.

We then exhibited these images along with recordings from each participant across Scotland, at Saltspace Gallery in Glasgow (21-23 August), the Bon Accord Shopping Centre in Aberdeen (2-3 October), and in Holyrood for MSPs (15-17 September). At our opening night in Glasgow, we were honoured to be joined by Dr Justice Reilly and Alison Thewliss, Minister for Community Care and MSP for Glasgow Central.

As part of this project, we spoke with parents about their breastfeeding journeys as well as why representation matters to them. It is in their own words that this message is at its strongest. Here are the videos we had linked to the exhibitions:
